The Department of General Dentistry of Peking University School and Hospital of stomatology, established in 1991, is the Post-Doctoral Institute of Clinical Dentistry, which was co-founded by Meikai and Asahi Universities of Japan and Peking University.

The main work of General Department is providing comprehensive dental examination and dental care for outpatients. There are 9 general dentists, 19 specialists (including endodontists, periodontists, oral surgeons and prosthodontists) and 28 nurses. There are 24 dental units totally, 21 located in the sixth floor, 3 located in the third floor. We provide not only common dental examination and treatment for all the patients; we also provide VIP dental care for some patients in Special Medical Unit.

Patients can get comprehensive dental care from our general dentists. The specialists in different professional field also work in teams. For some difficult cases, patients can easily get consultation and referral for multi-disciplinary treatment within our department.

Special Medical Unit of our department and the reservation system were established on July 1st, 2009, so that patients can get comprehensive and high quality clinical services with appointment convenience. Special Medical Unit located in the third floor, providing a more comfortable, convenient and efficient treatment option for all the patients.

The post-graduate education is another main part of our daily work. With the faculty team composed by general dentists and specialties, we provide clinical training for the dentists comes from all over the country. There are 10 dentists get one year systematic clinical training in our department every year, they get theory courses, case presentation and literature review training as well.

We also take the work of dental residents clinical training every year. There will be 12-15 dental residents just graduating from dental school get systematic clinical training in our department. After one year treating patients with the supervisors, they will begin their dental career much more safety and confidently.

At the same time, the Department of General Dentistry opens the evening clinic for patients, providing diagnosis and treatment of common dental diseases.

Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology, is a professional department with specialty in orthodontic clinical practice and related-research. It was founded by Professor MAO Xiejun, a pioneer in Chinese orthodontic specialty in 1949 and became the first orthodontic clinic in China. Orthodontic department was established in 1977 with the approval of Ministry of Health. Then under the leadership of Professors HUANG JinFang and FU MinKui, the former chairpersons of the department, the department has become a premier orthodontic center in China after decades of development. Currently, Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is National Key Discipline and unit for National Elite Course Project.

Department of Orthodontics, with first-class facilities, provides orthodontic treatment with a variety of techniques. Each technique has its own characteristics and advantages. Department of Orthodontics inherits and develops all kinds of classical and advanced technology, including functional appliance, classical edgewise technique, Begg technique, straight-wire technique, Tip-edge technique, MBT sliding straight wire technique, multi-loops edgewise technique, Alexander technique, lingual orthodontics and invisible techniques, etc. The level of treatment outcome is confirmed to be the top in China. 93% of orthodontists in Department of Orthodontic hold doctoral degree, and 60% of them have one-year or more overseas study background.

Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is the chief-editor unit for state-compiled textbooks and president unit for Chinese Orthodontic Society (the 1st-4th and 6th). With all-round development and proficiency in both research and practical skills, Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is highly recognized in the field of Chinese orthodontics and has achieved renowned reputation globally.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School of Stomatology, developed from the dental unit, Medical College Peking University, which was founded in 1941. As one of the earliest departments of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China, it was formally established in 1955. In 1982, the department was appointed as one of the first Doctorate Program in China by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. The first medical PhD degree in China was awarded in this department, which was selected among the first key disciplines being qualified for the “National 211 Project”. Currently it is a designated National Key Discipline, National Continuing Education Base, AO CMF Fellowship Center and IAOMS Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery Training Center.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is composed of one outpatient clinic, one laser and cosmetic clinic, five wards for in-patients, one resuscitation room and one laboratory. The department is equipped with 29 dental units and 157 patient beds, providing medical services to approximately more than 70,000 out-patients; more than 6,500 in-patients are operated under general anesthesia per year.

Currently the department has many domestic and international well-known experts and professors. Among the 169 staff members, there are 56 doctors, 113 nurses and 3 teaching assistants. There are 18 professors/chief physicians and 12 associate professors/chief physicians. 15 doctoral supervisors and 12 master’s supervisors are listed in the postgraduate program. More than 80% of the doctors in the department hold doctoral degrees. The department enrolls more than 25 postgraduate students, 20 visiting doctors and 5 International Fellows per year.

During the last three years, 17 research grants with an overall amount of 18 million RMB from National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology of China were granted. 221 papers were published in international and national peer reviewed journals.

The diseases involved in lips, oral cavity (teeth, gingival and alveolar bone, buccal, tongue, mouth floor, palate, oropharyngeal), face (maxilla, mandible, orbital, zygoma), cranial base, neck, salivary gland may be treated in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. These diseases are listed as follows:

1. Alveolar surgery, i.e. wisdom teeth extraction, alveoloplasty.

2. Oral and facial implantation.

3. Head and neck tumors and tumor-like disease.

4. Oral and maxillofacial trauma.

5. Congenital developmental deformities such as cleft lip and palate.

6. Orthognathic surgery and distraction for acquired cranio-maxillofacial deformities.

7. Salivary gland diseases.

8. Functional reconstruction of defects of the head and neck.

9. Brachytherapy for malignant tumors in the oral and maxillofacial areas.

10. Infectious diseases.

11. Organ transplantation, submandibular gland transfer for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

12. Facial nerve diseases such as trigeminal neuralgia.

13. Oral and maxillofacial vascular malformations.

Clinical specialties and research topics include: digital techniques and surgical navigation, dental extraction under ECG monitoring, sedation management for oral surgery, radiofrequency treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, brachytherapy for malignant tumors in the oral and maxillofacial areas, surgical treatment for tumors of skull base, submandibular gland transfer for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca, functional surgeries of salivary gland tumors, multidisciplinary management of trauma and related deformities, orthognathic surgery and distraction for cranio-maxillofacial deformities, comprehensive treatment of oral and maxillofacial vascular malformations, functional reconstruction of head and neck defects, TMJ ankylosis and surgical management, sequencing treatment of cleft lip and palate, translational medicine, and tissue regeneration.
