The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) was created in 1900. Only dentists who successfully complete an accredited orthodontic residency program after dental school are accepted for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists. We represent 19,000 orthodontist members throughout the United States, Canada and abroad.

AAO members are gifted and highly educated specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities to correctly align teeth and jaws. Whether you are considering clear aligners or traditional braces, orthodontists have the training, the experience and the treatment options to make sure you get your best smile.

We seek to help prospective patients understand the importance and life-changing benefits of orthodontics for all patients: children, teens, and adults. Explore the site. You’ll find information on treatment options, how to find an AAO-member orthodontist in your area, information on what to expect during treatment and much more.

Founded in 1900, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is the world's oldest and largest dental specialty organization. It represents nearly 19,000 orthodontist members throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. All orthodontists are dentists and may simultaneously hold membership in the American Dental Association. Its headquarters are in Creve Coeur, Missouri, near St. Louis.

Orthodontists are dental specialists in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of orthodontic problems who have completed two to four years of advanced training in an accredited orthodontic residency program. Only those dentists who have completed this training may call themselves "orthodontists," and only orthodontists may be members of the American Association of Orthodontists.

In 2013 Gayle Glenn was elected as the first female president of the American Association of Orthodontists.

AAO is affiliated with the Canadian Association of Orthodontists.
